can you cut a topaz with a dremel (gemcutting ?)?

i know it sounds stupid but if you had a large gemstone & you wanted to cut/carve a shape out of it-& are more concerned with general shape that the cut (even if the outside of the gem is smooth or roughed a bit when im done-not pretty looking like gems used in jewelry)-can a dremel do it with the right bit, or would it severely crack/shatter the stone? also if its possible-what bit would be best for roughing a general shape?
also, could it be done with a dremel sanding bit? i realize the bit would need changed like 50 times but if it would work then its what im looking for.

Yes, it can be cut with a Dremel using a diamond coated bit. Diamonds are the hardest naturally occurring substance on this planet.
I suggest using a water bath to prevent burning the work or the bit; or at least cooling both frequently using a fine mist from a spray bottle filled with water (or some similar technique).
