Going Out Of Business Jewelry

What does everything think of this work situation?

I work for a small, private owned insurance company. Recently the boss partnered with a guy who has one of those “We buy Gold” companies. Today the guy came in and did a presentation for me and 2 other ladies in the office. I am the receptionist, they are underwriters. Apparently people are going to start coming in and we have to determine if their gold is real, figure out the carat weight size, calculate how much money we’ll pay them and then barter with them over it. Is it just me or does this seem wrong? I am truly uncomfortable with it – we are not in the jewelry business. I’ve already said I won’t do it but the other 2 ladies are fine with it. Does this seem weird and unsafe to anyone else??

I don’t blame you for not wanting to get involved with this. There are many articles available to you to read on the current companies operating via the web and television that purchase consumers gold items. In fact, the largest one, Cash4Gold, is currently being sued by the government for basically stealing from their customers. A former employee went public with what they are trained to do which is rip people off and offer them just a very small percentage of what their gold is worth. They are trained to value it and then offer them a very small fraction of its worth. My local TV station did an expose on a gold company and after having offers of over $300 from local jewelers, they sent it in and received a check for $8 and some loose change. It sounds like your boss has really made a poor business decision here and will eventually be driving away legitimate insurance customers who won’t trust a gold dealer like that. He should stick to selling insurance. As for whether you are in on it or not, hopefully that decision is yours, if you are forced in to it, you may have to find a new job.
