What does it mean exactly when a guy gets you expensive jewelry?

He told my best friend that he was going to get me a promise ring, but instead he gives me an expensive necklace. What exactly is that supposed to mean? He said he didn’t want to make a promise that he couldn’t keep and break my heart. I’m kind of hurt in a way, and I’m not sure how to read into that. Please help!!

First of all the price of the jewelry really doesn’t matter. Some guys throw around expensive jewelry just because they can without it really meaning a thing. Accept what he said for face value. He likes you and he wanted to show you that by getting you something nice but he isn’t ready to take this relationship to the next stage. A commitment ring is a big step and shouldn’t be given or accepted without a great deal of thought and serious consideration to what a commitment is. Right now he is being honest with you and tell you he isn’t ready for that step but that he likes you and that there could be that commitment in the futre.
