I’ve felt terrible for doing this, what would you have done in the circumstances?

A few years ago I was working part-time in a jewellers shop, I hadn’t had any experience selling jewellery and a customer asked to look at a tray of rings which I showed her. Somehow I didn’t notice till she’d gone that one of the spaces was empty(the ones that were sold had a little plastic thing in the part where the rings would be).
I just panicked and put one of the plastic things in the empty spot and didn’t say anything.
I know it was stupid, but I didn’t want to admit that someone had probably stolen it without me noticing.
What would you have done?
It was too late to call the cops , because the person had gone.
I also felt bad because the owners of the shop were friends of a relative- it was so stressful working there because I was always worried after that

How is it that the manager didn’t realise this? When he would look at the accounts, particularly the revenue from sales, he would have noticed that there would be less money in the till, in relation to the amount of rings sold.

If this is true, I think the manager may have known.

Its the same at bars, you cant give away a free pin of beer, as the bar owner will be able to calculate the amount of money that should be gathered, in relation the the beer quantity distributed.

HOWEVER, I would have done the same as you, in the heat of the moment.
