Do I need one of these, and where do I get them?

Ok, I have a rare blood disorder called Diamond Blackfan Anaemia, and am allergic to penicillin.

I have to have a blood transfusion every 6 weeks and am currently on Desferrioxamine infusions 3 times a week.

Would you recommend that I get a piece of medical jewellery and which one should I get? As far as I know they are quite expensive, and I am not sure which one would be most effective in an emergency situation, i.e would a bracelet or necklace be more noticable? Would I need a wallet card to add addional information onto?

Finally, do you know where I get these items from? Please provide website addresses if need be.

I think it is a good idea to have something on you that identifies your medical condition and also the fact that you have a penicillin allergy, just in case you were ever in an accident or anything and couldn’t be asked. You could probably do with a wallet card but I’m not so sure about how to get one of those – I’d advise you talk to your GP or consultant about it, as they will know. In the meantime, you could always just get a square of card and write the information on it – stick it in your wallet and it’s bound to be found in an emergency.

Medics will always check for medical jewellery or alert cards – bracelets are most common but they’ll check for a pulse and see a necklace as well. It’s really a case of personal preference.
