What’s appropriate for a formal black tie event?

My boyfriend just asked me to go with him to a formal black tie event in 2 weeks. I’m short on cash and refuse to buy one of those $200-300 “prom dresses” but i still want to look classy. I tend to look short and stumpy in long dresses so i guess my queston is Can i wear a shorter dress to a formal formal event? If not, what are some good catalog sites or stores (inexpensive!)?

black tie is very formal – 3/4 length dress at the minimum. (cocktail dress). either check out ebay or vintage stores for second hand bargains, makeover an old bridesmaids dress or borrow a friends……
tk max have some good bargains if you are prepared to look.
ask your man to help with the cost – after all it is his do you are going to.
